Parish children make banner to carry in processions

On Sunday, June 29, our church celebrated our patrons, the Holy Leaders of the Apostles, Peter & Paul. Children of our parish carried the banner they have been working to create for the past few months.

In March, the children of the Church School began to make a banner that they could carry in church processions. On the most special occasions—Holy Week, Pascha, or our parish feast day—the whole church goes in procession, carrying the cross, candles, icons, and banners. But these banners are far too large and heavy for children to carry; so they will be making one themselves, just their size.

Elena Plekhanova is a member of the parish who works in fabric arts. Working with M. Jenny Mosher to come up with a simple and beautiful design, she organized the first workshop for the children. They made significant progress on one side: painting a blue background, then gold stars, and finally stencilling a phrase from scripture. Andrew Bobik, another artist in the parish, also provided encouragement and guidance to the children.

Another workshop to paint the reverse side is scheduled for Sunday, April 6.
